Makatea
is a makatea, a raised coral
atoll. One of only three in the Pacific, we took advantage of the
rare opportunity to see it, and it was an intriguing sight: steep
vertical cliffs over 100 meters high, with no pass and no lagoon.
Two
moorings are near the remains of an old pier formerly used for a
phosphate mining operation. Though the moorings are in very good
condition, they are alarmingly close to the surf and rocks! Picking
one up took nerves of steel, and we didn’t stay long.
