MM's: Ua Pou

This island is aptly named: Ua Pou means "The Pillars". This crown of volcanic spires can be seen all around the island; here Second Wind is at anchor at Hakahetau.

Though they're a bit hard to see in this photo, there are lots of vakas on the beach & wharf. In the evening, several strong men were out paddling vigorously; their vakas had logos on them, and we're certain they were training for racing competitions.

When we hiked inland, jungle foliage with a pillar backdrop was a common sight.

Another common sight were walls and platforms of large boulders, remnants of the many people who used to live in the valleys; this is the Tetahuna archaeological site.

This hike ended at Manfred Cascade, a delightful place for a picnic and a refreshing dip!

I was entranced by the shifting clouds and light on the pillars...

...and kept photographing them!
